Volunteers have been working in the Finsbury & Clerkenwell area since 1974. Initially a handful of local people gave their time to provide additional help to others in need, particularly those who were housebound or elderly. From this small beginning the numbers grew and the group formed itself into an organisation, and then registering as a charity in order to expand its activities and achieve financial independence.

The catchment area for the Finsbury & Clerkenwell Volunteers was expanded by 50% in October 1999 and now covers the entire Calshot neighbourhood as well as the traditional areas of Finsbury & Clerkenwell.

Requests for services come from a number of sources including social workers, health workers, family members and friends.
